German home battery demand pushes storage above 5 billion euros

The German government wants to take battery cell production into its own hands. Minister for Economy and Energy, Peter Altmaier, proposes the construction of two large-scale factories, funded with a billion euro each.

The plan reported by Tagesspiegel has been in the making for some time and is in line with German as well as European politicians, who had stressed the importance of producing batteries in Europe. Their calls remained unheard by both carmakers and suppliers. This may now change as the German government reveals plans to invest a billion euro each in two mass production facilities.

While details remain scarce, one could be located in Lausitz, a region previously known for its coal industry. Moreover, it borders on Poland so that a bilateral project may be a possibility.

This is even more likely in light of a recent Polish-German battery alliance, which could follow the example of Airbus we reported. For the second facility, Tagesspiegel alleges that Continental and Volkswagen may team up in order to set up such a battery production facility in their home county Lower Saxony.

At the same time, VW had called on suppliers to invest into battery cell production to no avail. Bosch for example had said no early on we reported. Moreover, Minister Altmaier is planning to spend another million euros, this time on battery cell development.

A research facility will allegedly be set up together with the Fraunhofer Association. The Cabinet will vote on the proposal on October, If accepted, it would bring about a change in line with recent EU policy. Back in Febrauary, the European Commission had installed the European Battery Alliance with the aim to set up cell production on the continent in order to break the dependency on Asian suppliers.

For the time being though, this dependency is increasing. The Swedish version of a Gigafactory will start production from The major players involved in the lithium ion battery market are LG Chem Ltd.

Homeowners are also looking to battery storage to fulfill power needs, particularly in regions that have been threatened with blackouts, like California. Investing in one of these companies could represent an opportunity for investors looking to get in on the renewable energy boom.

Here's a look at what all three are doing to position themselves for gains. AES's distributed energy unit has been developing solar and solar-plus-storage projects since The company has more than MW of operating projects throughout the U.

The company has developed storage projects on its own and through Fluence, a partnership with the German industrial conglomerate Siemens.

GE has had a few stops and starts in its development of battery storage but has seen recent success with its Reservoir systems, including a key win in Australia. After securing contracts to install batteries sized at 30 MW or less in California and Ontario, the company recently landed a deal to deliver a MW project that will accompany the MW Solar River plant north of Adelaide, South Australia.

The battery is expected to be up and running in Vivint Solar is included on the list with more established players in the U. Utilities have started asking developers to build solar energy projects and install a storage component at the same time, rather than add storage to existing projects.

These solar-plus-storage projects have come online in Hawaii and California. Vivint is taking the concept to the residential solar market, having launched a contract structure that will enable homeowners to pay one rate for solar and battery storage in California. The battery can be used during power outages and during peak demand hours when utility rates are highest. Vivint typically offers installation of residential solar panels with no up-front cost to the customer in exchange for a year contract to sell power to the property owner.

AES, GE, and Vivint have established programs to meet the demands of utilities and homeowners with near-term and long-term renewable energy goals.

The Parises are one of more thanGerman households and small-business owners — and an estimated 1 million people worldwide — who have dug deep into their pockets to invest in solar units with battery storage since lower-cost systems appeared on the market five years ago. Today, one out of every two orders for rooftop solar panels in Germany is sold with a battery storage system. The home furnishing company Ikea even offers installed solar packages that include storage capacity.

But analysts say this recent growth demonstrates the strong appeal of a green vision for the future: a solar array on every roof, an electric vehicle in every garage, and a battery in every basement. Analysts see the embrace of home batteries as an important step toward a future in which low-carbon economies rely on increasingly decentralized and fluctuating renewable energy supplies.

To date, electricity storage has lagged far behind advances in solar power, but as batteries become cheaper and more powerful, they will increasingly store the uneven output of wind and solar power, contributing to the kind of flexibility that a weather-dependent source will require. A lithium-iron-phosphate battery, which allows homeowners with photovoltaic panels to store excess solar electricity for later use. The progressive decline of feed-in tariffs — guaranteed remuneration for consumers supplying energy to the grid — also led to a sharp drop in solar energy deployment.

But against all odds, companies like Enerix, Sonnen, and Solarwatt have gotten back on their feet thanks to home energy storage systems. InEnerix had to shut down eight of its 15 affiliates in Germany and Austria. But since the battery boom, it has been reopening old shops and starting new ones, today boasting 54 outlets that sell panels, batteries, and energy optimization systems. Germany now has some 44 manufacturers of home energy storage systems. Germans have installed solar-panel arrays on more than 1 million buildings, but most of them lacked storage units.

Now, a growing number of those homeowners are buying batteries. With such top-of-the-line technology and lots of sunlight, an owner might save as much as 80 percent on electricity bills, according to Solarwatt, a Dresden-based outfit manufacturing smart tech.

In Germany, in just a few short years, home storage units morphed from a quirky niche product for tech nerds and Green Party voters to one with enormous mainstream potential.

In California, as of all newly constructed residential buildings must be outfitted with solar panels.

The owners of these buildings will surely be giving battery systems a hard look as prices fall. Adding home batteries becomes especially attractive for consumers who own electric vehicles. Then you have to buy a new one.Falling module and battery prices are encouraging consumers to cut their power bill by generating their own electricity. The cost per kilowatt-hour of generating solar power range from 10 to 12 euro cents a kilowatt-hour compared with average costs this year of 30 cents a kilowatt-hour for power from the grid, according to the BSW solar federation.

Still, the growth rates for both retail and utility-scale storage should be faster to meet soaring demand, according to market observers including BVES and BloombergNEF. Electrification of transport and heating are driving consumption and grid strains are increasing with the expansion of wind and solar power.

Even with home battery subsidies worth as much as 5, euros, a typical amortization period of 12 years for new retail solar investments in Germany is too slow to foster a boom in sales, BNEF said this month in a report. The market in Germany for industrial-scale power storage stagnated in as prices paid by grid operators for balancing services dropped due to saturation of the market, BVES said.

Asian market leaders are ramping up output and some experts say there is a risk of a glut that could hinder the establishment of large-scale battery cell production by European newcomers.

Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said on Tuesday that Germany wanted to lay the groundwork in the months ahead for large-scale battery production in Europe and expected such production to start in Germany from He said Germany wanted to work with other European countries and added that it was already in contact with France, Poland and Austria on the issue and is holding detailed discussions with certain companies.

He said there were interested parties for several consortiums on battery cell production and added that around million euros could be necessary per consortium to start production. Altmaier said that the sites for battery cell output would be decided on with the consortiums and that there would be more than one.

The first production lines could be available from and each consortium is likely to provide 1, to 2, jobs at first, he said. Altmaier said he expected the first concrete investment decisions at the end of the first quarter of European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic said the battery market could be worth billion euros annually by Autos Updated.

Today it's apparent that local businesses need reviews. Online customer reviews are no joke, and there are many situations businesses need to avoid. Well, this one is:But generally speaking, online customer reviews are essential for the reputation of local businesses. When a company provides a service, the customer is either satisfied or dissatisfied. In the digital world today, customers often take their experience straight to the web.

If the customer expresses a positive experience, the review can be amplified on the web and social media to encourage others. But when the experience is negative, companies need to respond quickly. This needs to be done for the customer who left the review, but perhaps more importantly, for everyone else reading the reviews after. It is always a great feeling to read and hear positive reviews of your company, but negative reviews should be considered an opportunity for the business to do better.
